Trying to conceive can be an emotionally exhaustin

Trying to conceive can be an emotionally exhausting journey. The rollercoaster of hope and disappointment can leave you feeling depleted and resentful, and it slowly wears you down.

A big part of what I do with my clients is help them manage the emotional side of the fertility journey. Yes, it’s important to take care of your body and physical health during this time, but it’s also important to take care of your mental and emotional health---because YOU matter in this process. And you deserve to feel supported, resourced, and resilient as you move through your journey.

Fortunately there are things we can do to support yourselves through this process. Mindfulness practices based in psychology and yoga can do a lot to help us manage the ups and downs.

This isn’t to say the challenges and hardships are magically fixed--they aren’t. But it’s less about fixing, and more about facing what’s in front of us. Learning to accept what is in this moment, vs. fighting the reality of the situation, and holding on to the expectations we held.

This is far easier said than done, but leaning into a few mindfulness practices can help us anchor into the present moment and face our challenges with resilience and strength.

Stay in the present.

This is some of the most potent advice I give to my clients. When we’re trying to conceive, we often spend a lot of time in what’s previously happened in the past—like all those months we didn’t get pregnant.

Or we spend time spinning out all the possible scenarios for the future, worrying about what will or won’t happen.

But guess what? We can’t change the past and we don’t have control over the future.

All we can control is this moment we’re in.

Obviously that’s way easier said than done, but when we can pull our minds out of the past and future and anchor into the here and now, it’s often a lot less overwhelming.

Try taking a breath, saying a mantra, or wearing a piece of jewelry to help bring you back when your mind starts time traveling.

This doesn’t mean we can’t mourn the past or make plans for the future, but overwhelm often sets in when we spend too much time there.

So find a small routine to help you stay in the present—to support yourself emotionally ok this journey.

If you've been on the fertility rollercoaster for a while, it can all be really triggering.

That's why I'm sharing a few tips for surviving the day over on my blog this week.

Whatever you choose to do or not do this Mother's Day, be sure to honor and be gentle with yourself.

Acknowledge that the present is hard.

Also acknowledge that you're doing the best you can in this moment.

And trust that you'll find your way forward--wherever that leads you.
